Approach to the burning room:

Goal

·     Extinguish fire

·     Avoid casualties

Rescue

·     Evacuate staff and patient from burning room

·     Either oneself or the assistant must remain with one’s own patient

Alarm

·     Call switchboard -> code red

·     Follow local fire warden’s instructions

Contain

·     Close doors to burning room

Extinguish

·     Fire extinguisher at base of flames if safe

·     Use CO2 or chemical foam extinguisher, not water

 

Approach to one’s own room:

Goal

·     Get patient out

·     Get staff out

Assessment

·     Can the fire be extinguished? (if no -> get out)

·     Are we safe in this OR? (if no -> get out)

·     Is safe to stop operating now? (if yes-> get out)

Surgeon

·     Stop operating whenever safe

·     Remove instruments

·     Cover wounds with sterile gauze / dressing / drape

Anaesthetist

·     Transfer to mobile trolley

·     Drugs: start propofol TCI 3mcg/mL; bring extra prop/aramine/roc

·     Ventilation: use manual bag + mask, bring fresh O2 cylinder

·     Monitoring: ensure NIBP, SpO2, ECG, capno

·     Equipment: take laryngoscope, guedels, face mask, syringe
