· Anaesthesia is a cognitively demanding profession

· Many take time off (illness, family, work overseas, work in another area)

· Can't afford to be rusty

If prolonged	· Re-entry programme
-Indication	· >1 year absence
-Duration	· Default 1 month per year of absence · Subject to learning needs analysis
-Location	· Ideally a prospective work location
-Content	· Individualized to the intended scope of practice
If illness	· Written confirmation of fitness to practice

Stage 1:

Preparation

· Courses: ALS + CICO +/- EMAC

· CPD plan: according to learning needs analysis

Stage 2:

Close supervision

· Duration: depends upon

o Duration of absence

o Learning needs analysis

· Assessment: structured peer review of practice

Stage 3:

Distant supervision

· Log book

· Case discussions

· Assessment options:

o Structured peer review of practice

o MSF

o Audit of outcomes

Stage 4:

Verdict

· Written report to ANZCA

· Endorsement by ANZCA
