RD18 (2017) Latex allergy

 

Cause of problem:

·        Rubber protein -> type 1 hypersensitivity

·        Chemical additives -> type 4 hypersensitivity

 

Associated food allergies:

·        Banana

·        Avocado

·        Chestnut

·        Kiwifruit

·        Tomatoes

·        Potatoes

·        Stone fruits

 

Workplace response:

·        No latex

o   N.B. still present in some workplaces

·        No powdered latex gloves

o   Cornstarch powder absorbs allergens

o   Application causes aerosolization

 

Personal response:

·        Early diagnosis

·        Carry epipen

·        Seek occupational advice
